'Tis the Season for Fire Safety

As the weather gets colder and the holidays are quickly approaching, it is important to maintain fire safe practices. Keep the following tips in mind:

  • Choose flame resistant or retardant decorations. Keep decorations away from doors or windows, do not block any exits.

  • Keep lit candles at least 3 feet away from decorations or any flammable materials. Keep children and pets away from lit candles.

  • Check lights before use and be sure to replace any broken lights, cords, or loose bulb connections. Read manufacturer's instructions before use and use in the proper manner (indoor or outdoor as instructions permit).

  • Use clips, not nails, to hang lights and avoid damaging the cords.

  • Be sure to check your smoke alarms.

  • Tell any guests that arrive your fire escape plan and where exits are located.

  • Stay in the kitchen when cooking on the stovetop,

  • Be sure to blow out candles and turn off all lights and decorations before leaving the home or going to sleep.

  • If you choose to get a live tree, be sure to water it daily. Dispose of your tree promptly after the holiday.
