Stay Fire Safe on Campus!

As the new school year begins, it is important for all students to remain safe on and off the college campus. When you live on campus, your dorm is your home. To keep yourself and others safe, keep these tips in mind!

*Note: Most Universities already enforce fire safety standards in on-campus housing.

  • Keep all exits clear of clutter. Doors and windows should remain easily accesible.

  • Know your escape plan! Elevators should not be used in the event of a fire, know where the stairs are and how to easily escape from your room. Count the number of doors from yours to the stairwell in case of limited visibility.

  • Never leave cooking food unattended. If using a microwave, be sure that all cooking materials are microwave safe and do not overcook food.

Off-campus students should keep the following tips in mind:

  • Be sure to have working smoke alarms on every level of the home, inside each bedroom, and outside every sleep area. Smoke alarms should be tested at least once a month.

  • Never leave cooking food unattended, and never cook under the influence of alcohol.

  • Have an ABC fire extinguisher close by when cooking and know how to use it properly.

MD Life Safety would like to wish for all students a great fall semester!
