Carbon Monoxide Be Gone!

Happy Fire Safety Friday!

Carbon Monoxide (CO) is an odorless, colorless gas that is emitted when gasoline, wood, coal, propane and any other fuels are burned completely. Stoves, and ovens in our kitchens, or even generators and vehicles running in an attached part of the home can be lethal sources of carbon monoxide.

One can be exposed to carbon monoxide in small amounts for a long period of time, or they can be exposed to an abundance of CO over a short period of time. This can make detection of carbon monoxide poisoning difficult. Symptoms of carbon monoxide poisoning can include dizziness, nausea, weakness, and even unconsciousness. Often times, CO poisoning is confused with flu-like symptoms.

Carbon monoxide alarms help to detect any signs of unsafe levels of Carbon Monoxide in the home. Maintaining your carbon monoxide alarms is very similar to that of smoke alarms. CO alarms should be installed on every level of the home and outside each sleeping area. Be sure to test your CO alarms once a month along with your smoke alarms! If you hear your CO alarm go off, get outside quickly and safely. Remember to always get outside first before you call for help.

Ways to prevent carbon monoxide from filling your home is to make sure your gas stoves are turned completely off once you are finished cooking, warming up your car outside from the garage, and only use gas or charcoal grills outside and away from the home for their intended purpose.

Attached below is a tip sheet that summarizes all the dangers of carbon monoxide, and how to prevent the poisoning of you and your loved ones. Feel free to share with your friends and family!
