Cancer: Prevention, Support, and Resources
In a study from the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), firefighters were shown to have a higher risk for cancer compared to the general US Population. The risk of cancer increases with exposure to harmful toxins. It is important to have the proper training, wear the protective equipment properly, and use the appropriate SCBA equipment.
In Maryland, the Maryland State Firemen's Association has the Cancer Support Network Committee. The Committee has bags with supporting materials for those undergoing treatment. Throughout the year they lead various fundraisers to help fill the bags with items. To contact the MSFA Cancer Support Network Committee, please contact your local fire organization.
