Fire & Life Safety for Children
Window Safety
According to SafeKids Worldwide, 8 children under the age of 5 died, and over 3000 children had severe injuries due to a window fall.
Here are some tips to avoid window falls:
-
Install window guards and stops so that the window does not open more than four inches. Be sure that an emerge release device is included in case of fire.
-
Once guards are installed, be sure to implement them into your family's home fire escape plan.
-
If windows have the capability, open them from the top, so that the opening is out of reach for children.
-
Keep windows locked when not being used.
-
Move furniture away from windows to help prevent children from climbing the furniture and falling out the window.
-
In the event that your child falls from a window and is severely injured, do not move them, as they could have a spinal injury. Instead, call 911 immediately and wait for medical professionals to arrive.
