Let's Talk Smoke Alarms

For the final week of March, we will continue with our discussion of Home Fire Escape Plans by knowing when to begin our escape.

Smoke Alarms are the vital tool in our home that alerts us of smoke or fire.

Why are smoke alarms important?

According to the NFPA, having working smoke alarms in your home cuts your risk of dying in a fire by 50%. Making that safe escape out of your home is reliant on early detection of fire, giving you the most time to get out and stay out.

Where should I place smoke alarms within my home?

Smoke alarms should be placed on every level of the home, outside every sleeping area, and inside every bedroom. It is recommended that smoke alarms are interconnected; when one alarm sounds, they all sound. Install smoke alarms at least 10 feet from a cooking appliance to minimize nuisance alarms. Smoke alarms should be placed away from vents and out of corners to avoid dust and dead air space.

Maintenance?

The NFPA recommends checking your smoke alarms weekly, at least monthly. If you are still using 9-volt battery-operated alarms, be sure to replace your batteries every 6 months. Alarms should be replaced every 10 years following the manufacturer's date on the back of the alarm.

Maryland Law now requires all new and outdated smoke alarms to be upgraded to the 10-year Lithium-Ion Sealed Battery Smoke Alarms. These new alarms eliminate the need to replace batteries every month. They only require monthly testing and replacement every 10 years from the date on the alarm. This law went into affect January 1st, 2018 in hopes to reduce home fire deaths throughout the state.
