Let's 'Spring' Into Fire Safety

As the new Spring Season begins, many of us will partake in annual spring cleaning. During your cleaning, be sure to check your home for any fire safety hazards by following the tips below:

  • Check for damaged cords, wiring, fuses, or breakers. If repairs are necessary, contact a certified electrician to perform the work.

  • Remove piles of trash and yard debris.

  • Recycle stacks of papers, magazines, etc.

  • Check for water leaks, especially near electrical appliances.

  • Have adequate clearance (at least three feet) between heating appliances and combustible materials.

  • Take a walk through your home and be sure that all doors and windows are easily accessible for a quick escape. Have at least two exits out of every room in the home. Eliminate any clutter such as toys, shoes, or other objects that may be tripped over or in the way of making an efficient exit.

  • Make sure street numbers are posted properly and are clearly visible from the road.

  • Make a home fire escape plan, inform everyone in the home, and practice your plan at least twice a year.

  • Keep flammable liquids in a well-marked proper storage container. Place them in a cool, dry place outside of the home and inaccessible to children. Avoid mixing cleaners and chemicals as some may create a toxic gas.

  • Test your smoke alarms and CO detectors. Remember to check the date on the back of the alarm. If your alarm is older than 10 years, it needs to be replaced. To find out more on smoke alarms, CLICK HERE.
